Casting call: “Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!” … The Movie
Youngster gamers will never be able to understand just how effing amazing the original 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System was for us latchkey kids of the 1980s (between the NES, G.I. Joe cartoons and cable TV, we were good little TV-addicted zombies). The NES was a bona-fide phenom back then, and its graphics and gameplay were revolutionary, especially compared to its competitive predecessor, the Atari 2600.
Of course, no NES cartridge collection was complete without the boxing game Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out! We purists have no patience for that ridiculous early ’90s sham Punch-Out! Featuring Mr. Dream. No, there’s only one Punch-Out! for the NES in our myopic rose-colored-glasses view of the past, and it featured the licensed likeness of Tyson, the then-World Heavyweight Champion of boxing. (He wasn’t as crazy, sexual-assaulty, or ear-bitey back then.)
Tapping the unbridled nostalgia for the game (Piston Honda’s “I’ll give you a TKO from Tokyo!” takes us back, man), the clever folks at Asylum have done a casting call for a movie version of Mike Tyson’s Punch Out! It’s just shy of genius. Here are a few highlights, with Asylum staff commentary:

Little Mac/Tom Cruise: We’ve got two words for anyone who thinks Tom Cruise is too old to play the lead in a boxing flick: “Rocky Balboa”

Doc Louis/Reginald Veljohnson: This will be a breakout role for Reginald Veljohnson, perhaps the first time in his film career he won’t be playing an affable cop. Maybe we can make him an ex-cop. (Veljohnson is famous for his nice-guy cop role in Die Hard.)

Glass Joe/Owen Wilson: Fortunately, Owen Wilson’s nose already has that broken look, saving him hours in the makeup chair.

Don Flamenco/Adam Sandler: Adam Sandler was born to play a flamboyant Spanish boxer. It’s a lot more believable than him playing a football player, anyway.

Bald Bull/Charles Barkley: Much like Bald Bull, Charles Barkley is beloved by fans for both his prowess and trash-talking.
There’s even more fun casting call action over at Asylum.
