GEEKGASM: Grit, gears, magic and tech
Steampunk enthusiasts cried out in pain when the fabulous Steampunk Magazine went from quarterly release to a bi-annual periodical. But now we fans of this steam-powered storytelling subgenre (if you have a fascination with clockwork gears, Victorian-era technology and alternate history, you’ll love it) have something to keep us entertained while editor Magpie works her magic on SM’s summer edition.
Meet the UK-based steampunk magazine, The Gatehouse Gazette.
A 23-page PDF magazine of essays, cartoons, reviews and interviews, The Gatehouse Gazette covers fashion, tech, and literature. Although it doesn’t seem to feature original fiction (one of my favorite parts of Steampunk Magazine) it does seem dedicated to point us to the latest in steampunk novels. It also gives equal coverage to a lesser-known corner of the genre called “dieselpunk.”
According to Wordie, “The term ‘dieselpunk’ was first coined to describe a darker, dirtier side of steampunk, informed by cyberpunk sensibilities, set in a post-steampunk era with a higher industrial level of development. … (D)ieselpunk transports modern-day technologies and attitudes into the era of mid-century pulp fiction — pulp referring to the inexpensive fiction magazines widely published from the 1920s through the 1950s, typically remembered for their sensational and exploitative stories and thrilling cover art.”
I’m eager to see what comes out of this new periodical, and hope that others crop up as well.
